There will be no perfect season in the CAA as the Rhode Island Rams suffered their first loss of the season. The Rams were on the road in their loss where they took on Western Michigan University in a game that ended with a score of 14-47. While the game got away from the Rams in the end they started the game off really well. As they managed to have a 7-3 lead at the end of the first quarter. But the second quarter is where things got away from them as Western Michigan managed to rattle off 28 unanswered points to make it 7-31 at the half. Western Michigan would add a few more scores in the third and one in the fourth to get to their final score of 47. For the Rams they had an opening drive touchdown to start the game and then didn’t score again until the fourth quarter. Overall the Rams were heavy underdogs and started off strong but the Broncos were just too much for them to handle. In the game the Rams had 251 total yards of offense. While they had 251 yards of total offense they actually had 256 passing yards. Passing wise they were fine but rushing wise they had negative 5 yards on the ground. The Rams also turned the ball over four times, with three fumbles being lost and one interception being thrown. Rhode Island will look to bounce back as they go on the road for their second straight week as they take on Brown University out of the Ivy League.

Villanova got their second win on the season when they took down William & Mary by a score of 31-24. In the game Villanova managed to score at least seven points in each quarter and that would be the difference as they held the Tribe scoreless in the third. For Villanova they put up 426 with 194 coming from the pass and the other 232 coming on the ground. While the offense put up impressive numbers it was the defense that had the biggest star as Shane Hartzell, a Linebacker, brought home the CAA Football Defensive Player of the Week. In the game Hartzell managed a team-high 10 tackles, with four tackles for a loss, two sacks, and two quarterback hurries. The four TFL’s were a career-high and the most by a CAA player this season. Not only did Villanova manage to bring home the Defensive player of the week but they also brought home the CAA Football Special Teams Player of the Week with Ja’briel Mace, Jr. earning the nomination. He earned it when he opened up the second half by scoring a 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. This being the first kickoff touchdown for Villanova since 2019. Villanova will look to keep earning the player of the week awards and try to keep pace for the top spot in the conference when they take on New Hampshire.

The Black Bears have ended their losing streak to kick off this season as they got a win at home over North Carolina A&T by a score of 37-30. The Black Bears were the final team in the CAA without a win before their week five victory. In that win they put up 478 yards of total offense, with the passing game going for 298 yards on 20 completions. This performance earned Carter Peevy the CAA Football Co-Offensive player of the week do to his yardage based off of completion percentage as well as his accounting for three touchdowns with two from the pass and one being rushed in. The rushing game also had a good game as they put up 180 yards. The Black Bears did struggle at times with penalties as they had eight penalties where they gave up 80 yards. Overall though right now is a time to celebrate for the Black Bears as they got their first win and now they go to face the Bryant Bulldogs who are coming off of a loss at home. Both teams will be playing their third conference game against each other as Bryant still is after their first conference win on the season.

The Bulldogs come off of a heartbreaking loss as they fell to the Towson Tigers 26-24 in a game that came down to a two-point play where the Tigers prevented the score with just 23 seconds left in the game. For the Bulldogs they managed to outgain their opponent as they had 347 total yards to Towson’s 304. The Bulldogs put up 218 passing yards with 129 rushing yards. Bryant’s one main issue though was turning the ball over. As they turned the ball over two times. One of those times from an interception and the other time from a fumble, while their defense couldn’t get any take-aways in the loss. Now they will host the Maine Black Bears in their third conference game of the season as the Bulldogs still are after their first conference win.

Stony Brook got off to a very slow start to the season as they were 0-2 to start the year, and after getting into the win column in week three they then suffered a tough loss to Lindenwood in week four. They got their second win of the season though and looked good doing it as they won by a score of 35-10 over Merrimack. In the game the Seawolves managed to get at least seven points in each quarter of their victory. In the game the Seawolves put up 438 yards of total offense with the running game doing most of the work by having 251 yards. The passing game did what it needed too with 187 passing yards. There was one mistake from the passing game as they did throw one interception in the game but the defense did a good job in not letting Merrimack score off of the turnover. Now Stony Brook will go on the road for the third time this season when they take on conference opponent UAlbany. While the Great Danes have struggled so far this season the Seawolves are 0-2 on the road this year. Both teams will also be seeking their first conference win on the year in this week six matchup.

Albany Athletics

The Great Danes one week after getting their first win were outmatched as they fell to New Hampshire 24-6. For the Great Danes they managed to get a total of 275 yards. The passing game got 181 of those yards while the rushing attack got the other 94 yards. The Great Danes offense struggled to move the ball throughout the game and even turned it over once via an interception. Their defense also gave up several big drives as New Hampshire had one drive in each of the first three quarters where they had 12-plus plays go for 75-plus yards enroute to a touchdown. The Great Danes will look to get their defense right as they host the Stony Brook Seawolves as both teams look for their first conference win.

The Aggies took another loss on the season as they couldn’t keep pace with the Maine Black Bears in a game that ended 37-30 in favor of Maine. For the Aggies it was a game where they struggled to score in the first and third quarter as they managed zero points in those two quarters, and then in the second and fourth they managed to put up 30 points. In the game they didn’t turn the ball over once and were very clean when it came to penalties as they only committed four that gave up 30 yards. The problem was that their defense could not stop Maine’s offense who put up 479 yards of total offense. For the Aggies in the game they managed to put up 348 total yards of offense with 279 of those yards coming through the air. The rushing game got the remaining 69 yards. The Aggies go back on the road as they take on William & Mary with both teams looking for their second conference win on the season.

William & Mary Tribe Athletics
William & Mary Tribe Athletics

The Tribe could not come away with the win in week five as they fell to conference opponent Villanova 31-24. A game in which William & Mary scored in every quarter but the third, it was that third quarter that ended up being the difference in the game as Villanova scored in every quarter themselves. In the third quarter they put up 10 points as they opened up the second half with a 100 yard kickoff return. For the Tribe it was a game in which they put up 356 yards of total offense, with 233 coming from the pass and 123 coming from the run. Overall it was a solid day for offense but the defense struggled as they never took the ball away and gave up 426 total yards. William & Mary will now look to get back to an even record this week when they host N.C A&T in a conference game with both teams holding a 1-1 conference record.

The problem was that they lost the turnover battle 3-2 as they threw three interceptions in the loss. The Pirates also struggled to stop the run as they gave up 288 yards on the ground alone. They also gave up 169 passing yards as they gave up 457 total yards of offense, add in the penalties where they had 13 of them for 96 yards and you have a recipe for disaster. This rushing performance was done mostly by Jimmyll Williams, Jr who went for 172 yards on 13 carries. That performance earned him the other half of the CAA Football Co-Offensive Player of the Week award. The passing game did what was needed as they passed for 169 yards. They did turn the ball over two times in the game, one of those coming from a fumble and the other from an interception. The defense did help them out though by getting three takeaways of their own with all three coming from interceptions. Now Elon will hit the road as they prepare to take on the Tigers who also got a week five victory, as both teams look for their second conference win.

Towson Tigers Athletics
Towson Tigers Athletics

The Towson Tigers are back to their winning ways as they managed to pull off the win in week five against the Bryant Bulldogs by a score of 26-24. The Tigers defense came up huge for them in this game as they managed to take the ball away two times once from a fumble and the other time from an interception. The defense also managed to stop Bryant’s two point conversion to tie the game with just 23 seconds left in the game. For the Tigers they managed to put up 304 yards of total offense. The passing game did just enough as they put up 153 yards with the running game just behind it in yardage with 151 yards. The special teams really had it going as they made four field goals enroute to their victory. Now the Tigers will host Elon in a conference game matchup where both teams will be looking for conference win number two.
