We’re thrilled to be featured on FCS Nation Radio! The Northeast Conference (NEC) is a unique FCS league, defined by high-quality, competitive football, but above all, unpredictability. While national championships aren’t usually expected from the NEC, the league offers thrilling games and standout players.

As a former NEC head coach once told me, “The NEC is a funny thing.” That line stuck with me ever since my first interview covering the league. It proved true when Central Connecticut State, picked last in 2024, won the league and made the playoffs.

We provide more in-depth coverage in our annual NEC preview magazine, available here. You can also follow our content year-round at NECBlitz.com.

1. Duquesne

While CCSU was picked first in the coaches’ preseason poll, we have Duquesne ranked at the top. After extensive research and coach interviews, it’s clear the Dukes are well-positioned.

  • Quarterback: Ty Riddell, a former SoCon champion, joins as a transfer to replace Darius Perrantes.

  • Running backs: Taj Butts and Offensive Rookie of the Year Shawn Solomon provide depth.

  • Offensive line: Returning five experienced starters, likely the best in the league.

  • Defense: Key players include A.J. Ackerman, Jack Dunkley, Antonio Epps, and DJ Cerisier.

  • Linebackers: Transfer Tyson Meiguez rounds out the defense.

The Dukes should be favored in every NEC game this season.

2. Central Connecticut State (CCSU)

The defending champions are something of a wildcard. They return Offensive Player of the Year Elijah Howard, and WR Donovan Wadley, 2023 NEC Offensive Player of the Year, has transferred in.

Challenges include:

  • Losing much of their offensive line and OL coach Jeff Ambrosie (to Syracuse)

  • Replacing top pass rushers on the defensive line

  • Filling the void left by Defensive Player of the Year Kimal Clark

Despite the talent, the Blue Devils could face closer losses if turnover production drops.

3. LIU

The Sharks are building momentum, returning all-purpose threat Ethan Greenwood, who rushed and passed for over 900 yards last season. LIU runs one of the most unconventional offenses in the NEC and relies on two quarterbacks.

  • Defense: DQ Watkins, Rafael Fasolino, and Todd Bowels anchor the unit.

  • Offense: Greenwood remains the most dynamic player in the league.

Expect LIU to challenge for the title with talent and creativity.

4. Stonehill

Predicted 8th by most polls, Stonehill could surprise this season. The Skyhawks boast strong returning production, continuity, and a revamped strength & conditioning program.

  • Defense: Led by Charles Battaglia (LB) and Mo Seide (DB)

  • Offense: RBs and WR Brigham Dunphy return; QB Jack O’Connell may finally provide stability

Stonehill has historically performed well against top teams, including Duquesne.

5. Robert Morris University (RMU)

RMU is the NEC wildcard this season, facing coaching turnover and heavy losses through the transfer portal.

  • Key departures: WR Noah Robinson (Tennessee Tech), QB Anthony Chiccit (Temple), RB room, and OL injuries

  • Defense: Must rebuild almost every position

Despite the challenges, RMU is skilled at rebuilding through transfers but may see a down year.

6. Wagner

The Seahawks are more talented and deeper offensively than in recent years but must navigate a quarterback logjam with Jordan Barton and Jack Stevens.

  • Receivers: WR Terree McDonald steps up after Jaylen Bonelli’s departure

  • Linebackers/Defense: Brady Anderson anchors the line; Logan Barnes will be a force

Wagner is capable of surprises but faces stiff competition.

7. Saint Francis

This is Saint Francis’s final season in the NEC before moving to Division III and the PAC.

  • Key players: Experienced OL, QBs, Geno Calgaro (LB), Trey McLeer (DB)

  • Challenges: Talent drop-off and position changes (Andrew Vines)

The Red Flash will lean on depth but may struggle against DIII competition next year.

8. Mercyhurst

The Lakers are building a Division I program after transitioning from the PSAC.

  • Key players: QB Adam Urena, RB Brian Trobel, WRs including Rylan and Austin Urena

  • Challenges: Replacing OL and defensive linemen, including pro prospect Cameron Barmore

With a strong QB, they have potential, but the team is still building toward conference parity.

Final Thoughts

The NEC is a league where surprises happen every season. With high-level talent, transfers shaking up rosters, and unpredictable outcomes, fans are in for an exciting 2025 NEC football season.
