Game Previews
Chattanooga at Tennessee Tech
This isn’t yet a conference matchup, but it will be soon. Tennessee Tech was recently
announced as the newest member of the SoCon, starting in 2026. It should already be a
close matchup, however. Chattanooga had to face off against Memphis in week one, while
Tennessee Tech took care of NAIA Cumberland handily, as expected. Neither team was able
to get a good look at how they would fare against equal competition, which makes this
weekend’s matchup all the much more intriguing. Even with home field advantage for the
Golden Eagles, Chattanooga’s defense is skilled enough to force Kekoa Visperas into making
just enough mistakes for the Mocs to leave with a victory.
Chattanooga 21, Tennessee Tech 17
VMI vs. Ferrum
VMI was thoroughly defeated and outmatched by Navy last week. But the good news for the
Keydets is that they will almost certainly do the same to Ferrum, one of the worst D-II
teams in the nation. VMI fans will again have to wait another week to get a sincere look at
the talent level of this team. A trip to Bucknell next weekend will provide a litmus test for
the true fortune of VMI this year. In the meantime, they’ll cruise against Ferrum.
VMI 63, Ferrum 3
Western Carolina at Wake Forest
With around seven minutes to go in the second quarter of Western Carolina’s matchup
against Gardner-Webb, the Catamounts were flying high. Isaac Lee had just connected with
Malik Knight for a 69-yard touchdown to put Western up 35-7. That, however, is when the
good vibes came to an end. The Runnin’ Bulldogs went on a 45-7 run of their own, taking a
52-42 lead in Cullowhee with under two minutes to go. That is not a great sign for a
Western Carolina defense that has been overshadowed by a great Catamounts offense as of
late. You can’t blame an offense after a loss in which 45 points were scored. Unfortunately
for the Catamounts, the road doesn’t get easier, as they travel to Winston-Salem to take on
Wake. Although the Demon Deacons didn’t look exceptional against Kennesaw State, if
Gardner-Webb can amass 627 yards against Western Carolina, so can Wake Forest.
Wake Forest 48, Western Carolina 18
Furman vs. Presbyterian
These two teams both overachieved last weekend with Furman using a trio of Ian Williams
field goals to move past William and Mary and Presbyterian shocking Mercer on the road.
Based on those results, this game might actually be a pretty good matchup, especially given
the fact that, of course, they’re just 45 minutes apart. But Furman and leading receiver Evan
James have the upper hand here against non-scholarship Presbyterian.
Furman 24, Presbyterian 10
ETSU at Tennessee
It’s money time for the Bucs. Gone, unfortunately or fortunately, depending on your rooting
interests, are the days where Tennessee loses games to FCS and Group of Five programs.
Tennessee looked like the better team against Syracuse last weekend, and although ETSU
played quite well against Murray State, especially with 18 tackles from Dylan Rowsey, they
can’t be expected to match up with million-dollar recruits with big-bag NIL-type size on the
line for four quarters. The Bucs will put up more of a fight than many assume, however.
Tennessee 42, ETSU 14
Samford vs. The Citadel
Both of these teams struggled on offense last weekend, with The Citadel getting blanked by
the best defense in the FCS and Samford getting dismantled at home by West Georgia by
the tune of 34-3. For those keeping track at home, that’s an average of 1.5 PPG. Not great.
Mathematically speaking, one of these teams has to score at least that amount this
weekend. The money is on the Bulldogs. The Citadel Bulldogs, that is. After facing one of the
best, if not the best, defense at the FCS level, The Citadel is fortunate to play against a
defense that is very much not on that level. Playing through rain in Charleston, the
Bulldogs’ offense was more run-oriented, but they can capitalize through the air against
Samford.
The Citadel 20, Samford 17
Wofford vs. Richmond
Wofford put up a good fight against South Carolina State, but fell agonizingly close, losing
16-15. But the defense scored two points and special teams earned the other 13. If Wofford
is going to stand a chance against Richmond, they’ll have to move the ball. The Terriers
only managed 142 yards to SC State’s 410. The Spiders didn’t look all that great against
Lehigh, either, but at least their offense managed a touchdown. Even with the home field
advantage in Spartanburg, the Terriers simply don’t have the firepower to take down
Richmond.
Richmond 28, Wofford 14
