For some, perhaps seeing the UTRGV Vaqueros go 1-1 after their first two games would be a sense of okay… However, those who thought the Vaqueros would go 2-0 after their first two games are experiencing pure joy at the moment. Going on the road and getting their first-ever FCS opponent road win over Prairie View A&M. Despite the start being delayed by weather in the area, the defensive heroics of UTRGV defensive back Ailjah Prosser forced a fumble in the fourth quarter, which led to the jubilation of the Vaqueros' sideline as Elijah Graham recovered the loose pigskin to secure the win.
Next Up: Langston University
The Vaqueros continue with their non-conference schedule by hosting Langston University from Oklahoma. The Lions arrive in Edinburg, Texas, with a 0-2 record, including a loss in conference play.
Defensive Growth and Preparation
Defensive coordinator Brian Gamble said, “The way our defense played despite facing some adversity is the way I want to see our defense react.” When asked about Langston, Gamble added during Tuesday’s media availability, “They (Langston) will have a similar offense to what we saw last Saturday (against Prairie View). We have an idea as to what we will see now because of our young defense and have better preparation.”
Offense Looks to Keep Momentum
The upcoming game will help the Vaqueros determine their personnel packages on offense and defense, as they will face a challenging conference slate in two weeks. As for head coach Travis Bush, he praised his offense’s late-game execution: “Our late game situation was executed brilliantly, we took opportunities, and I was happy to see the game being clinched. Now we turn the page to Langston and hope to see another sellout crowd at Vackar Stadium.”
