No one expected UTRGV Football to have early success in its inaugural season until reality set in. With November football starting to separate playoff hopefuls from just playing for pride, conference games become bigger, especially for teams wanting to play some extra football.
The Vaqueros had the experience this past week as they faced a seasoned Stephen F. Austin team that was nationally ranked in both AFCA (Coaches) and Stats Perform (National). UTRGV entered that contest receiving votes in both polls, but the result was not the best as the Vaqueros fell 41-17.
“Credit SFA, they took advantage of our mistakes. We are nowhere near that level right now. They will be in the playoff conversation, but that’s where we aspire to be in the next few seasons as we continue to grow.” Head coach Travis Bush added, “We are resilient at home, and Nicholls has a good team and they have some good conference wins, but we need to focus on ourselves to give us a chance.”
Nicholls will enter Vackar Stadium with an overall record of 3-6 and a Southland Conference record of 3-2. The Colonels have wins over Incarnate Word, Houston Christian, and McNeese, but they have won their last two games at home. UTRGV has been flipping results, such as losing on the road but winning at home. The Vaqueros have not lost at home this season and want to be at 3-3 in the conference standings. The Colonels have not won on the road this season with a record of 0-5. If the numbers suggest anything, it should signal another UTRGV win, but the game is played on the field 11-v-11.
