After a scheduled bye week, the UTRGV Vaqueros will return to action as they travel to Beaumont, Texas, to face the nationally ranked Lamar Cardinals, who are ranked in both national and coaches' polls. UTRGV, on the other hand, is receiving votes in the coaches' poll for a second time this season.
Having played Southeastern Louisiana, a team also receiving votes nationally on the road, UTRGV knows it will have its hands full, according to head coach Travis Bush. “Lamar has been involved in close games as of late. I know they have defeated a ranked South Dakota team, and they have won some close games in conference
already.”
For UTRGV, travelling on the road for the third time this season, they hope to be on the winning side as they seek to have their first upset win of their inaugural campaign. The Vaqueros have scored 29 points per game on the road, having a 1-1 record.
Some of the keys that the Vaqueros will focus on are having third downs in manageable positions on offense, having special teams shorten the field for the offense, and scoring every time the team gets the ball. Defensively, for the Vaqueros, forcing three-and-outs, keeping the bend but don’t break mentality, and avoiding penalties that could extend drives.
Overall, this game should have plenty of fireworks as both teams love to score, with one looking for an upset and the other aiming to push their unblemished conference record to new heights at Provost Umprhey Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
