Edinburg, TX – Excitement is building in the Rio Grande Valley as UTRGV Football hosted its first Media Day at Vackar Stadium on Monday, giving reporters a behind-the-scenes look at the soon-to-be home of the Vaqueros.
With kickoff just weeks away, the event served as both a progress check on the stadium’s construction and an introduction to the team’s leaders ahead of their historic inaugural season.
A First Look at Vackar Stadium
Media members began the day with exclusive access to the playing surface, taking in the sight of the brand-new field as crews continued final touches around the venue.

Athletic Director and Vice President Chasse Conque emphasized the significance of the facility to the university and community.
“To see this at this stage makes me proud of all the work that has gone into the stadium,” Conque said. “Over $180 million has been poured into all sports, but this is the crown jewel because our first game here is a sellout.”
Head Coach Travis Bush on “Crunch Time”
Following the stadium tour, media had the opportunity to speak with Head Coach Travis Bush, who was named to lead the program in 2022. Bush acknowledged the monumental progress that has been made since his hiring.
“To see this for the first time since I was named head coach a few years ago, and the work that has been done here is incredible,” Bush said. “The team will have a couple of practices, and we will continue our evaluation as we know that crunch time is up on us as a staff.”
Player Perspective: Local Star Excited to Represent the Valley
Among the players available for interviews was Eddie Lee Marburger, a transfer quarterback from UTSA and a Rio Grande Valley native.
For Marburger, stepping onto the field carried special meaning.
“I am proud to be here, seeing this place (Vackar Stadium) for the first time,” Marburger said. “Being from the Rio Grande Valley has made me smile a little more knowing that the area where I live will finally have its football team, and I cannot wait to play.”
Preparing the Media for Game Day
The tour also provided a practical introduction to game-day protocols. Media members were shown designated shooting areas and toured the new media center, where postgame interviews will take place approximately 10–15 minutes after final whistle.
As the South Texas sun beat down, many journalists cooled off in the shade before wrapping up the day by recording promotional spots for upcoming broadcasts.
Looking Ahead
The buzz around UTRGV Football is undeniable, and with the inaugural home game already sold out, the program is poised to make a statement both on and off the field.
The Rio Grande Valley has long awaited a Division I football team to call its own. With the debut of Vackar Stadium, the countdown is officially on for the Vaqueros.
